Plasmodium malariae

• Thin blood film, Giemsa stained
• Growing trophozoite- “Compact form” containing a large cytoplasmic “ring” with reddish chromatin “dot” inside
• “owl eye” appearance
• Note infected red cell is smaller in size than uninfected red cell, otherwise look normal
• Yellow-brown pigment in cytoplasm
