Squintor or Strabismus

Squintor or Strabismus

by Prof. Prapassorn Phatikulsila, M.D.

Strabismus or strabismus It is a disorder in which the eyes are not parallel. is that one eye looks straight ahead. While the other eye is facing inward, outward, upward or downward, the eye may be dim all the time. or occasionally and sometimes the eye that is turned straight but the eye that is straight is turned It's called an alternating eye. Strabismus is found quite often in children (4%) or can occur as an adult. Many people may be found in the same family, but most of them have no family history.

How do two eyes work together?

When we have normal vision Both eyes will look directly at the same point. After that, the brain combines the images from both eyes into a three-dimensional image. It is this three-dimensional vision that allows us to feel depth. But when one eye turned Images that are different from both eyes are transmitted to the brain. But in very young children, the brain adapts to ignore images sent by the blind eye. and saw only the image from the right eye causing the child to lose the ability to tell depth or lose the ability to see in three dimensions As for adults who have just been born with strabismus often have double vision because the brain has learned to receive images from both eyes and can no longer press images from the squint eye

Lazy eye or amblyopia?

Good eyesight begins to develop in childhood. when the eyes are straight Having strabismus in a child can lead to a condition called amblyopia in the weaker eye. The brain only perceives images from the good eye. and ignoring images from the weaker eye (the side with amblyopia). This affects about half of all strabismus children. Lazy eye can be treated by covering the good eye. to make the lazy eye come back to work or can see better If a lazy eye is detected when a child is 2-3 years old, it is usually treated with good results. Closing the eyes to treat lazy eye is most effective when the child is in preschool age. If treatment is delayed Lazy eye is often permanent. The eyesight will only be restored very well.”

What is the cause of strabismus?

The real cause is still not clearly understood. when people look at an object Both eyes must be aligned. That is, every muscle in each eye must be in balance and working together. and to make both eyes roll together The muscles in both eyes must be well coordinated. The brain controls the muscles that roll the eyes. Therefore, children with brain disorders often encounter strabismus, such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intracranial fluid) or even brain tumors. which disturbs vision can also be the cause of strabismus

How is strabismus diagnosed?

Strabismus can be diagnosed by examining your eyes by a doctor or ophthalmologist. All children should have their eyes checked by a pediatrician. family doctor or an ophthalmologist before the age of four If there is a family history of strabismus or lazy eyesight should be examined by an ophthalmologist before the child is three years old It is often seen that small children appear to have crossed eyes. This is because young children tend to have a wide nasal base, a flat nasal bridge, and a pronounced inner corner of the eye. making it look like it has crossed eyes (called false strabismus). This tendency to disappear on its own as the child grows up. In general, an ophthalmologist will be able to tell if a child has true or false strabismus.

How can I treat strabismus?

Treatment of strabismus among pediatric patients aims to:

1. Maintain normal vision
2. Straighten the eyes
3. Restore the use of both eyes together (visualization in three dimensions)

In addition, in adults It also helps to relieve eye strain, eliminate double vision, and build self-confidence in socializing. Increase opportunities in life, career, resulting in better economic status for yourself and your family.

After the eye exam is complete An ophthalmologist can recommend a suitable treatment method for the patient. Treatment methods are divided into three major methods.

1. Wear eyeglasses
2. Close your eyes to cure lazy eye.
3. Eye muscle surgery

The other way is to wear glasses with prisms. Or training the eye muscles, etc. Some cases may require more than 1 method for the best treatment. Choosing a treatment method The doctor will determine the appropriate for each patient.
